2009 – A look back

As another year comes to a close, I take a look back at all that has happened in 2009 (in relation to what was posted). This year I actually started putting more attention and effort into this site, upgrading to WordPress from the previous custom application STARDBCMS and providing (almost) weekly updates. Since all this hard work was performed in February, I’ll omit January from this recap.

February
Restarted work on nephrus.net and imported some older content, some not from 2009.

March
Good news for fireworks fans as a funding source for the Celebration of Light was found.
A new season of Hell’s Kitchen saw one of the most annoying and useless contestants ever on the reality cooking show.
Canadians live in igloos? Not according to this Canuck!

April
My return to Sakura-con, pictures included.
The Vancouver Canucks sweep the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
H1N1 (swine flu) starts inflicting paranoia around the world.

May
Vancouver meets up with Chicago in round two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Royal Hudson makes a rare appearance outside of the WCRA after a major boiler overhaul.
My umpteenth visit to Chicago and second Anime Central.

June
Microsoft reveals a new camera and interface to enhance the Xbox 360 gaming experience.
Nintendo teases its fans with a new poster for the next Legend of Zelda game.
Anime Evolution moves into a new venue for its 2009 convention.
A new Hell’s Kitchen season has a British Columbian twist.
Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett pass on.

July
Daniel and Henrik Sedin extend their stay in Vancouver.
Andrew Raycroft arrives to back-up Roberto Luongo.
The Chicago Cubs return to local hands.
A Chicago landmark changes its name.
The Lower Mainland is hit by a lengthy heatwave.

August
Mike Gillis becomes President of the Vancouver Canucks after Chris Zimmerman steps down.
My first trip to Texas and visit to a Texan anime convention, San Japan.
The Canada Line begins operation from downtown Vancouver to Richmond and the airport.
Roberto Luongo’s contract with the Canucks is extended.

September
The Evergreen Line project progresses as a route has been chosen through to Coquitlam.
Alain Vignault’s contract with the Canucks has also been extended.
FUNimation announces the English voice cast for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

October
The Windy City loses the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.
InuYasha fans are rewarded with a proper ending to the series.
Chicago’s transit system prepares for fare hikes and service reductions amid budget overruns.

November
100 days until the 2010 Winter Olympics!
A modified budget allows the CTA to keep transit fares at their current prices.
Microsoft bans modified Xbox 360 consoles from their online gaming service.

December
Turnstiles will be seen at all train stations along with a new fare card system for Vancouver transit users.
A thwarted air incident increases security in airports across the globe.
