Another Vancouver icon is undergoing roof repairs. The famed white sails at Canada Place are being replaced as part of a rehabilitation project to fix leaks and install a covering that will last longer than the existing fabric.

The replacement is being funded by the federal government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Canada Place was constructed in 1983 and opened in time to house Canada’s pavilion for Expo 86. In addition to serving as a convention centre, the landmark is also a cruise ship terminal, as many large ships can be seen berthed during the warmer months.

The project is expected to be completed sometime in 2011.
