The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia

Last year, Nintendo published a really neat book on the Legend of Zelda series. Cover-to-cover, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is chock full of colour illustrations, never before seen sketches, history and an official timeline of all the Zelda games. There was just one small problem – Hyrule Historia was a Japan-only release.

Elusive and expensive, the book became coveted by fans around the world. Even then, if you can’t read Japanese, the most you can do is gaze over the artwork. A friend of mine, who is twice the Zelda fan I am, managed to snatch up a copy at Sakura-Con this year for only $60 USD – a steal.

All that will change on January 29th, 2013, when Nintendo and Dark Horse bring The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia to their English-reading devotees. The book is available for pre-order on Amazon at a cool $20.99 USD (originally $34.99 USD).

There are some differences on the outside; the Japanese print comes with a faux-leather cover emblazoned with the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary emblem. The North American cover lacks the same elegance; a similar background but with a melange of the green-clad Link in his various forms and outfits over the years with a rather simplistic logo at the top.

After looking through the Japanese copy back in April, it’s easy to see why so many people want it.

Video game web site Kotaku even managed to get a sneak peek at one of the English pages. Just one page is enough to let the drooling start.
