For months, there was speculation that the Vancouver Canucks would trade goaltender Roberto Luongo. In a spectacular twist today, it was not Luongo who left, but Cory Schneider.

In the midst of the 2013 NHL Draft, Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis revealed that the 27-year old Schneider had been traded to the New Jersey Devils for a first round, ninth overall selection.

Last season, Schneider boasted a 17-9-4 record with 2.11 goals against average, .927 save percentage and five shutouts.

It’s speculated that Luongo’s large, 12-year contract hampered the team’s bid to trade him. Schneider’s three-year contract was seen as being more attractive to other teams.
