Farewell, Luongo!
Farewell, Luongo!

Following some two years of rumours and speculations, it’s over: Roberto Luongo has been traded to the Florida Panthers from the Vancouver Canucks earlier today. In return, Vancouver gets forward Shawn Matthias and goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

The Panthers are thrilled to have Luongo back in net. “It is huge. He’s a big name down here and it sets the tone for our franchise,” said Dale Tallon, general manager of the Florida Panthers.

Luongo, who arrived in Vancouver in 2006, is in the fourth year of his 12 year, $64 million contract inked in September 2009. Vancouver will continue to pay 15% of Luongo’s contract until it expires in 2022.

The 24-year old Markstrom has played 12 games with the Panthers this season going 1-6-3. Meanwhile, Matthias scored nine goals and has accumulated 16 points in 59 games for the Panthers as part of the 2013-2014 season.
