2010 streetcar service

  Frederick Linsmeyer • October 19, 2009 • Local, Trains

Canadian aerospace and rail manufacturer Bombardier, has teamed up with the City of Vancouver to offer an alternative transportation option during the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic games – the aptly named Olympic Line.

A 1.8 km line of existing track, stretching from Granville Island to the Olympic Village Canada Line station, will feature Bombardier Flexity streetcars, which are on loan from the Brussels Transport Company in Brussels, Belgium. The streetcars have low floors which make boarding and alighting much easier, especially for those with strollers or in wheelchairs.

The streetcar service will operate 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, starting on January 21st, 2010 and run until March 21st, 2010.

Additional information on the streetcars, maps and media are available on Bombardier’s web site.

CTA Fare Hikes and Service Reductions

Passengers could be paying $3.00 for one of these.

Chicago commuters are facing fare hikes and service reductions on the CTA. Due to declining sources of public funding and the current economy, CTA President, Richard L. Rodriguez, detailed changes for bus and rail service for the 2010 budget.

The good news is that no bus or rail routes will be removed. However, service will be at lower frequencies and either start later or end earlier – Night Owl and rush hour service will not be impacted.

Bus fares are expected to rise 25 cents to $2.50 and rail fares will increase by 75 cents to $3.00. Passes will also increase – $8 for the 1-Day pass, $18 for the 3-Day pass, $30 for the 7-Day pass and $110 for the 30-Day pass. Reduced and Transfer fares will remain unchanged.

All service changes and fare increases are set to take place starting February 7th, 2010.

This budget will be presented during a meeting in November 2009 to the RTA and Cook County Board. The transit authority must submit a balanced budget to the RTA before November 15th, 2009 and must be approved by the RTA before the end of the year.

See the full proposed budget on the CTA web site.

Vancouver Canucks

It’s that time of year again, when the weather turns cooler and the gray clouds bring everyone back inside their homes, to the bars and to the ice rink. The 2009-2010 hockey season starts today and the Vancouver Canucks are in Calgary playing their division rivals, the Flames.

The puck drops at 7:00 PM PDT, but there will be some fresh faces out on the ice tonight. Christian Ehrhoff and Mathieu Schneider who play defense, right-wing forwards Mikhail Samuelsson and Sergei Shirokov and goaltender Andrew Raycroft, are all new to the west coast. The quest for Lord Stanley’s cup is on!

The Canucks play in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday before returning Monday to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets for the Vancouver home opener.

Anime Evolution 2010 dates and venue

  Frederick Linsmeyer • September 22, 2009 • Conventions

The dates and location for Anime Evolution 2010 have been released. The convention will be held on August 13th to 15th, 2010 at the University of British Columbia.

The date change was done to accommodate other conventions in neighbouring provinces and states, while the decision to return to the university was made due to room setup and configuration issues.

Personally, I liked the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre due to its location and proximity to public transit, food and accommodation. The bonus: everything under one roof with air conditioning! Wearing a jacket and wig in summer is not fun. However, beauty is skin deep and while it looks nice on the outside, the convention staff ran into some situations with room setup and other things.

Registration is not open at the moment and is expected to begin later this year.
