Celebration of Light 2011 – China

China lights up the night

The first evening of the Celebration of Light started off on the right foot. Although the fireworks festival is down to three days from four, it still was a spectacular show with the first performer, China, setting the bar. Event organizers made some adjustments to help spectators have the best experience – an increased police presence to clamp down on disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, signs that arranged the beaches into alphabetized sections (similar to that of a parking lot) to help people find their friends, and a grand stand for others who just wanted to sit and have a clear view. Even a stunt pilot provided some intense aerial acrobatics for those who waited on the sandy shore of English Bay.

The overcast sky and threat of rain didn’t dampen the spirits or the pyrotechnics. With the barges closer than ever before, everyone was treated to waterfalls of fire, champagne bursts of light, and the thunderous boom of exploding stars. And with a brilliant selection of music, the crowd was definitely pleased. Missed the show? Check out some of the best shots on Gallery!

Spain's performance in 2010

The sky will light up over Vancouver once again as the Celebration of Light returns to English Bay this summer.

Last year’s winner of the fireworks competition, Spain, will join China and Canada with their explosive style. China is first on Saturday, July 30th, followed by Spain on Wednesday, August 3rd and Canada finishing off on Saturday, August 6th, 2011.

Looking for a great spot to view the pyrotechnics? Bleachers will be setup next to the English Bay Bathhouse on the hillside and will be available for $35.00 online for early birds. The new seating is being tested out and is a neat idea for those who don’t want to fight for a good spot or more space between your neighbours. Proceeds go towards running the Celebration of Light event.

The annual Celebration of Light fireworks competition returns to English Bay for three nights in 2011. The event usually hosts four nights, but is down to three likely due to the high cost to plan and execute the dazzling displays. The Celebration of Light is funded by the City of Vancouver, local businesses and donations.

The event will light up the skies over English Bay on Saturday, July 30th, Wednesday, August 3rd and Saturday, August 6th, 2011.

Mexico delights the crowds

Mexico delights the crowds

The beaches were packed as Mexico took the stage, err, barge, during the third evening of the Celebration of Light. The crowd cheered on a magnificent performance by Lux Pirotecnia that lit up English Bay.

This time I sat with a group of friends on the rocks by the inukshuk on the beach and was able to capture some truly spectacular pictures of the fireworks. Sadly, a few last minute stragglers blocked my friend (who has the better camera and full tripod), so she wasn’t able to take any photos.

There’s only one more night left to the Celebration of Light – a tribute to China, on Saturday, July 31st, 2010. Head down to English Bay to catch the last pyrotechnical show of the year over the water.

Spain put on an amazing show for the second night of the Celebration of Light fireworks festival. The evening was bathed in dazzling colours that lit up the darkened skies and wowed the crowds along English Bay.

If you missed the show, take a look at some of the photos taken from my spot on the sea wall. These turned out much better considering I used a mini tripod to help steady the camera.

Mexico will take to the skies next on Wednesday, July 28th, followed by China on Saturday, July 31st.

Both Mother Nature and South Africa wowed Vancouverites with a double show over English Bay. A summer storm rolled out from the east in the early evening before the team from South Africa started lighting up the sky with their fireworks. Spectators braved the rain and wind to watch the impressive show.

The United Kingdom performs on Wednesday night and China wraps up on Saturday, August 1st. Pictures are now available on Gallery. Visit the Celebration of Light web site for additional details.
