Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster used his $14 million USDplayer option to stay in the Windy City for the 2012 season.

The Sechelt, BC native finished last season with 10 wins and 14 losses, while reaching the 200 innings mark. Dempster reached his highest ERA in four seasons at 4.80 after a dismal April with an ERA of 9.58 in six starts.

After speaking with Theo Epstein, the Cubs’ new president of baseball operations, Dempster announced his excitement in continuing to play with the Cubs and is looking forward to helping his team become World Series contenders.

BC’s own Ryan Dempster will be pitching for the Chicago Cubs on Opening Day at Wrigley Field. This honour has usually been held by Carlos Zambrano, who has opened the last six seasons.

Zambrano, who’s known for his fiery temper, has congratulated the Sechelt native on the Opening Day opportunity.

Cubs manager Mike Quade made the decision after meeting with Dempster, Zambrano and Matt Garza.

Dempster will be on the mound facing the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, April 1st, 2011.

Zambrano back in Cubs rotation

Carlos Zambrano, the fiery pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, is back in rotation starting on Monday, August 9th against the San Francisco Giants.

This is Zambrano’s first start since being removed for one of his notorious outbursts in the dugout during the June 25th game against the Chicago White Sox. After giving up four runs to the cross-town rivals, Zambrano’s ensuing tirade saw him suspended for three games.

Zambrano is 3-6 when starting, and has a 5.71 ERA.

Lou Piniella retiring after this season

Lou Piniella, the vocal manager of the Chicago Cubs, has announced his retirement the end of this season. Piniella has helped the Cubs to win National League titles back in 2007 and 2008.

Piniella joined Chicago in 2006 after leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees. Upon retirement, Piniella will be the 14th winningest manager in the MLB.

Piniella had based his decision upon wanting to spend more time with his family.

Milton Bradley traded to Seattle

The Chicago Cubs have traded outfielder Milton Bradley to the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Carlos Silva and $6 million in cash. Bradley had initally signed with the Cubs for $30 million over three years in January 2009.

Silva, from Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, only had eight appearances with the Mariners last season due to an shoulder injury. The pitcher had an 8.60 ERA in the games he played.

Bradley, from Harbor City, California, appeared in 124 games with 12 home runs, 40 RBI and .257 batting average this past season.

Cubs sale to Ricketts finalized

It’s official, the sale of the Chicago Cubs and the iconic Wrigley Field is now finished. Joe Ricketts of Omaha, Nebraska-based TD Ameritrade, now owns the team and its assets after paying Chicago’s Tribune Company a hefty $845 million USD.

Joe Ricketts will head the board as chairman while Pete, Tom, Laura and Todd Ricketts operate as the team’s board of directors.

An announcement is expected at Wrigley Field, this Friday.

Chicago Cubs back in local hands

The current owner of the Chicago Cubs, Sam Zell and the  Tribune Co., has finally reached an agreement to transfer the team and Wrigley Field to Joe Ricketts’ family for $900 million USD.

The transaction has been passed to Major League Baseball and is pending review, so it’s not entirely official. Neither side wished to comment since the terms may change.

It looks like the sale to the Ricketts family is a good thing since they are Cubs fans. About time too.

Cubs pitcher gone for six games

Chicago Cubs ace pitcher, Carlos Zambrano, has been suspended for six games after exploding during the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, May 27th. During the seventh inning, Pittsburgh’s Nyjer Morgan managed to sneak in on home plate, however, umpire Mark Carlson declared him safe and that’s when Zambrano got in Carlson’s face. Following a brief bump between the two, the umpire ejected the pitcher and Zambrano became animated, even motioning that Carlson should be ejected. Cubs Manager Lou Piniella tried to step in, but Zambrano stormed off throwing the ball back onto left-centre field followed by his glove. It didn’t end there as the Gatorade machine in the Cubs dugout was beaten up by Zambrano with a bat.

Major League Baseball’s Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations, handed down a six game suspension to the Cubs pitcher starting Thursday. Zambrano will be eligible to return next Thursday in Atlanta against the Braves. Zambrano has accepted the suspension and has made no decision to challenge it. The Cubs won 5-2 over the Pirates on Wednesday’s game. No word yet on the condition of the Gatorade dispenser.

It was a perfect day for a ball game: the sun was out, barely a breeze and a lively crowd at the Friendly Confines cheering on the Chicago Cubs who blew away the San Diego Padres 11-3.

Ryan Dempster, the Cubs’ BC-born pitcher, threw his first multi-hit game, and the rookie, Bobby Scales, batted a pair of doubles along with Reed Johnson giving the Cubs the advantage.

The Cubs play against Houston on Friday at Wrigley Field.
