Canucks 3 – Bruins 2 OT

  Frederick Linsmeyer • June 4, 2011 • Hockey

It was all Alex Burrows in the second match up of the Stanley Cup Finals between with the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins. The left winger scored the first and last goal and assisted Daniel Sedin in a 3-2 overtime win to lead the series 2-0. BC boys Milan Lucic and Mark Recchi both scored for the Bruins.

Since it was a fantastic day out (one in a long time), I decided to head downtown and catch the game at one of the free party zones. Being a weekend, I left early and made my way to a jam packed Granville Street where one of the giant screens was setup. Because the crowd had gotten so large, the Vancouver Police Department were turning people away and directing them to Canada Place if they wanted to catch the game. I wasn’t aware that the convention centre would be hosting a similar event, but made a dash to only realize the plaza outside the Pan Pacific Hotel was relatively empty. Once more people arrived, it filled up, with street and spaces outside of Waterfront Centre turning into a sea of green and blue.

Now that the Canucks are in Bean Town, any open spot to catch the home team is expected to go quickly, so leave early!

Canucks 2 – Predators 1

In a nail-biting six game series, the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators was a battle of the goaltenders: Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo and Nashville’s Pekka Rinne. Game six was no different as only a single goal was the deciding factor in the Canucks’ 2-1 win over the Predators in the Music City.

Mason Raymond opened the scoring for the Canucks early in the first period, followed by Daniel Sedin a few minutes later. However, the Predator’s David Legwand would get his team up within one shortly after the start of the second period.

Rinne and Luongo would both shut the doors for the rest of the game making some great saves. Were it not for Rinne, the series would’ve been over long before.

The Canucks now wait for the outcome of the Detroit-San Jose series which goes to game six on Tuesday.

Canucks clinch President’s Trophy

  Frederick Linsmeyer • April 1, 2011 • Hockey

The Vancouver Canucks beat the visiting Los Angeles Kings with a score of 3-1 to clinch the President’s Trophy. This is the first time the Canucks have ever been awarded the prize for having the most points in the regular season.

Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Christian Ehrhoff all scored for Vancouver, while Kyle Clifford had Los Angeles’ only goal.

The Canucks have 113 points with four games left; the Philadelphia Flyers, first in the Eastern Conference, have no way of catching up to take the trophy. The Flyers were the only team to pose a threat in the standings.

Having the President’s Trophy also guarantees home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup playoffs, assuming the team advances through each round.

Canucks beat the Wild, have over 100 points

  Frederick Linsmeyer • March 15, 2011 • Hockey

They are number one in the league with 101 points, 10 more than the Philladelphia Flyers and 11 points on top of the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference. The Vancouver Canucks are the first team to reach the 100 point plateau in the 2010-2011 season, a club record. The Canucks achieved this after beating the Minnesota Wild 4-2 at Rogers Arena last night.

The first period was all Vancouver with Raffi Torres, Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler finding the net to give the home team a 3 goal advantage.

Defenceman Sami Salo left the game after being hit by a puck while on the ice. It’s not known how bad the injury is.

Late in the second period, Minnesota’s Andrew Brunette put his team on the board after beating goaltender Roberto Luongo.

Mikku Koivu then brought the Wild within one during the third period, but an empty net goal by Kesler sealed Minnesota’s fate.

The Canucks play the Colorado Avalanche at home on Wednesday, March 16th.

Daniel Sedin out due to injury

  Frederick Linsmeyer • October 11, 2009 • Hockey

Vancouver Canucks forward Daniel Sedin, will be out 4 to 6 weeks after sustaining an injury during last Wednesday’s 7-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens.  During the second period, Sedin deflected a puck to his right foot which was first believed to be a deep bone bruise. However, that bruise later appeared to be broken bone.

Steve Bernier will play alongside Henrik Sedin and Alex Burrows while Daniel is recovering.

Henrik and Daniel Sedin will be back playing with the Vancouver Canucks after signing a new contract just as they were about to become free agents. Both brothers signed 5 year, $30.5 million deal, which is a little short than the reported 12 year, $63 million contract they were looking for.

Canucks General Manager, Mike Gillis, flew to Sweden to talk with the twins in hope they would stay in Vancouver. Both Henrik and Daniel have been playing for the Canucks since they were first drafted in 1999.

The twins had their best season in 2008-2009, with Daniel scoring 31 goals and Henrik acheiving a career high of 22 goals.
