Vancouver can claim itself to be one of the best cities to grab a bite in. With so many different cultures and peoples in this part of the province, there’s some good eats to be found. These are a selection of some of my favourite dining establishments.

Coconut ice cream with deep fried banana
Coconut ice cream with deep fried banana at Guu

Kitanoya Guu
A chain of Japanese izakaya restaurants, Guu delivers tasty tapas-style dishes that are unique and delicious. Great atmosphere, but be prepared to wait if they’re busy — they do not accept reservations. Locations in Gastown, on Robson, on Thurlow and inside Richmond’s Aberdeen Centre.
Multiple locations, check their web site.

Fuji Sushi
Tucked away in a strip mall in Coquitlam is the authentic Fuji Sushi. Run by a master chef trained in Japan, Fuji Sushi delivers in taste using local and imported fish. The restaurant is usually packed, so don’t be surprised if you’re waiting for a bit. It’s worth it!

Uncle Fatih’s Pizza
The busy Broadway-Commercial Drive intersection has a little secret – Uncle Fatih’s Pizza. This little walk-in pizzeria has some of the best pies in the region. Generous slices, fresh and creative toppings and a tasty crust with sesame seeds make this worth the trip. Uncle Fatih’s is just a few steps from the Broadway and Commercial SkyTrain stations.

Tuna sashimi
Tuna sashimi at Okoman

Okoman
Hidden out of the way just off the intersection of North Road and Cameron Street on the Burnaby-Coquitlam border, is a delightful Japanese restaurant, Okoman. With a large menu featuring everything from sushi to traditional bento boxes, you can’t go wrong. One of Okoman’s specialties are fusion rolls based on eastern and western ingredients, all with generous portions. Okoman has a friendly atmosphere and is easy on the wallet.
