Ten years ago, a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix (then called Squaresoft) resulted in the birth of a video game franchise called Kingdom Hearts. Last month, Square Enix announced that it would combine the games Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD (which is the first game, but with extra battles, cut scenes and other goodies), Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories HD with footage from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days into one compilation titled Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX for the PlayStation 3.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu interviewed Tetsuya Nomura, the director of the Kingdom Hearts series recently. When asked if Kingdom Hearts II would receive the same treatment as the first games, Nomura answered “It’d be unusual if there wasn’t.”

There have been a multitude of games in the Kingdom Hearts universe spanning a variety of consoles. Nomura expressed his hope that fans would “make new discoveries” now that the storyline will be in proper sequence.

Famitsu uploaded a number of screen captures from Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX on their web site. The game is expected to be on store shelves in Japan sometime in 2013.
