Even though the PlayStation 3 has been available since 2006, Sony still kept churning out PlayStation 2 consoles. Now, after 12-plus years and an estimated 150 million units later, Sony is closing down their Japanese production line for PlayStation 2 hardware.
While there are still consoles on the shelves in Japan, once they’re gone, that’s it. However, this doesn’t mean the end as some developers will still keep making games for the juggernaut. A collection of some 11,000 individual titles make up the vast library for the PlayStation 2.
Sony hasn’t mentioned anything if they will cease manufacturing the console in other markets, or about the eventual successor to the PlayStation 3; the PlayStation 4.
