After some 16 hours, both the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players Association have come to a deal regarding the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The announcement was made this morning by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr. The “basic framework”, as Bettman stated, has been laid down but still needs to be ironed out before it is presented to the NHL Board of Governors and to the players for review and ratification.

Based on information available, the league and players consented to a $70 million salary cap for what’s left of the 2012-2013 season with a $64.3 million salary cap for 2013-2014. If teams are over the cap limit, they will be given the ability to use two compliance buyouts prior to the beginning of the season. The money uses in the buyout does not affect the team’s salary cap, but the player’s own revenue.

While no start date has been announced, it’s possible that the teams will end up playing a 50 game or 48 game season all dependent on when the league finalizes their schedule.

It has been 113 days since the lockout started.
