The Vancouver Canucks have announced that Jim Benning has been selected as the team’s new general manager. Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Trevor Linden, revealed the name last night to 200 ticket holders attending a town hall-event in Coquitlam.

Benning, who is from Edmonton, Alberta, joins the Canucks from the Boston Bruins where he spent the last seven years as the assistant general manager. His responsibilities included that of adviser to the general manager for trades, free agent signing and player evaluation. Before that, Benning worked with the Buffalo Sabres in various roles related to scouting.

Prior to his work in the front offices, Benning played in the National Hockey League. For nine seasons, he split his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, after being drafted by the former in 1981.

Benning joins the Vancouver Canucks as the team’s 11th general manager.
