During this morning’s Nintendo Direct for E3 2018, Masahiro Sakurai, a director at Sora Ltd., introduced the latest title in the Super Smash Bros. franchise: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
As a Nintendo Switch-only title (sorry Nintendo 3DS fans), this game will include every player ever in the Super Smash Bros. series. That means the Ice Climbers are back. Snake returns. So does Wolf, Young Link and Pokémon Trainer. Cloud is still here. There’s also some new faces: Inkling from Splatoon and Ridley from Metroid. The roster is an astounding 65 playable characters.
Here’s the full list:
- Donkey Kong
- Captain Falcon
- Peach /Daisy ε
- Ice Climbers
- Dr. Mario
- Marth / Lucina ε
- Young Link
- Mr. Game & Watch
- Meta Knight
- Pit / Dark Pit ε
- Zero Suit Samus
- Pokémon Trainer with Squirtle
- Pokémon Trainer with Ivysaur
- Pokémon Trainer with Charizard
- Diddy King
- King Dedede
- Toon Link
- Mega Man
- Wii Fit Trainer
- Rosalina & Luma
- Little Mac
- Mii Fighter Brawler
- Mii Fighter Swordfighter

Sakurai mentioned there are many changes to the gameplay mechanics to improve the experience — some are subtle, other’s much more noticeable. Smash attacks are shorter to allow the game to resume quicker, Fire Emblem mainstays Roy and Marth now speak English instead of Japanese, with the Villager, you can see what items they’ve pocketed, R.O.B. has an indicator on his chassis showing how much longer it can hover in the air for. Daisy, Lucina, Dark Pit are “echo fighters”, which use the same skill set as Peach, Marth and Pit respectively, and are identified by the “ε” epsilon next to their name. Also, all current Super Smash Bros. amiibo figures are supported. But there’s more! Nintendo is releasing a GameCube controller compatible with the Switch for those who are miss the days of the console’s comfort and layout.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate comes out on December 7th, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
