In response to the requirement for self-isolation during the COVID-19 outbreak, BC Ferries is allowing passengers to remain in their vehicles on the enclosed lower decks of their larger vessels on routes between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

Transport Canada requires all passengers to leave their vehicles if parked on the enclosed lower decks of any ship; vehicles parked on the open upper decks were permitted to remain inside. BC Ferries began enforcing this rule in October 2017.

To minimize the spread of COVID-19, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization require people to keep their distance of up to one meter (3.3 feet) from others, especially those who are ill.

In addition to allowing passengers to remain in their vehicles, the company is also increasing cleaning and disinfection of public areas and frequently touched objects like railings, door handles, buttons and point-of-sale devices. BC Ferries is also suspending hot food service, buffets and baggage checks onboard and in terminals.

BC Ferries will restrict access to the lower, enclosed vehicle decks once the COVID-19 outbreak ends.
