It’s been a long time coming: the ability to pay with debit for fares at BC Ferries terminals is almost here.

Debit was finally introduced onboard BC Ferries vessels in October 2018, but still were not accepted when purchasing vehicle or walk-on fares.  The company had explained that this was due to limitations with their existing technology and that paying with debit would slow down the purchase process as opposed to simply swiping or tapping a credit card.

Updated card readers are being deployed at the smaller terminals first, the major routes will get them last, presumably to minimize disruptions if complications with the technology arise.

According to a press release from BC Ferries, the upgrade to allow debit at its terminals is expected for completion by the end of March.
