This morning, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for the PlayStation 5, hosted a near-hour long live stream video giving a detailed look into hardware of the newest console from Sony.

In the video, it was revealed that the PS5 is being designed with game developers in mind after receiving their feedback on ways to tackle some of the largest issues impacting their work in terms of graphics, load time and more.

To address some of these concerns, Sony is including an “ultra-high-speed SSD” and custom I/O system as a way to eliminate loading screens. These technological improvements allow developers to create games where internal resources are accessed with little to no visibility from the player for smoother game play and more immersive worlds. A new GPU provides greater resolution and introduces a new feature called ray tracing; recreating how light is seen and reflects off of various objects. Ray tracing will add realism never seen before in gaming, be it scenes involving water, glass, and the light bouncing off of a character’s hair. A custom 3D audio engine was created to handle sound regardless if being heard from a TV speaker or a high-end multi-speaker setup; with differences being heard in how rain drops land on certain surfaces or which direction an enemy may attack from.

The PS5 will have backwards compatibility for nearly 4000 published PS4 titles; Sony took the top 100 of these and expects many of these to be playable at launch. There’s still plenty of work being done on compatibility and more improvements are to come.

Sony provided a table of the official detailed hardware specifications, seen below.
