Yesterday, the growing list of events affected by the COVID-19 pandemic added Anime Expo to its ever growing list. The four day convention was planned for July 2nd – 5th, 2020 is now pushed back to July 2nd – 5th, 2021.
A post shared on the official web site and to its social media accounts yesterday afternoon announced the cancellation of this year’s event due to restrictions by local officials, including bans on travel and large gatherings.
It is with heavy hearts that we are announcing the cancellation of AX 2020. Our utmost concern is for the health and safety of our community. This was one of the most difficult decisions we have had to make in the 29 years of Anime Expo.

Attendees who pre-purchased badges can either request refunds or have it rolled forward to next year. Hotel reservations booked through the convention were also cancelled.
Anime Expo, which is one of the largest anime conventions in the world, has attracted both fans and industry members of Japanese popular culture to Los Angeles for the last 29 years.
Other anime and pop culture conventions have announced cancellations for this year, including Anime Central, and San Diego Comic-Con.
