Two years ago, TransLink closed the Granville Street and Seymour Street entrances to Granville Station to replace the ageing escalators in the deepest station on the SkyTrain system. As of today, all entrances to the downtown Vancouver station are open with six brand new escalators.
The three main escalators in Granville Station are the longest on the SkyTrain network at 35 metres (115 feet) in length. With this upgrade, there is less expected downtime for maintenance due to improved durability. The original installations had travelled a distance of 385,000 kilometres with a capacity of almost 10 million people a year.
The work was done under the transit authority’s Expo Line Escalator Replacement Project, which is updating infrastructure that was built over 30 years ago when the line first opened.
In addition to these escalators, there’s new directional signage and added screens for arriving trains.
