Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train was a runaway success for the anime film’s opening weekend bringing in $44 million USD (¥4.6 billion JPY) between October 16th and 18th, 2020.
According to Variety, this was the “best performing film” globally according to sales data, given that many countries have curtailed large gatherings of people in enclosed locations, such as theatres, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Japanese media site Natalie reported Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train was shown on 403 screens with 342,493 people in attendance.
Demon slayers Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Kyōjurō Rengoku, and Inosuke Hashibira, along with Tanjiro’s possessed sister Nezuko are shown boarding a train in the dead of winter. Reports of mysterious disappearances in the train’s many coaches have spurred interest from the group. Like many of their adventures, it’s anything but a normal trip as the train itself has another demonic customer riding on board…
The film, animated by Ufotable, and released by Aniplex and Toho, is an adaptation of the manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotōge, which concluded in May of this year.
There’s still plans for a North American release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train, anticipated in early 2021, but it appears Taiwan is next in line for the film where it will screen on October 30th, 2020.
