Today, Funimation revealed animated film Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is coming to theatres in Canada and the United States on Friday, April 23rd, 2021 according to posts on social media.

A digital release of the film is planned for Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021 on Apple TV, Microsoft Store, Vudu, Google Play, PlayStation Store, and Amazon Prime.

Canadian cinema chains Cineplex, Landmark and Guzzo Cinemas make no mention of the film on their web sites, though that’s sure to change in the coming days. Many theatres across the country remain shuttered due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic where local and provincial health authorities have restricted large gatherings of people.

The updated trailer shows an “R” rating from the US-based Motion Picture Association; fans under the age of 17 would need to be accompanied by an adult to watch Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in theatres. In Canada, an “R” rating means no-one under 18 can watch, even in the presence of an adult guardian.

In the film, demon slayers Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Kyojuro Rengoku, and Inosuke Hashibira, along with Tanjiro’s possessed sister Nezuko are shown boarding a train in the dead of winter. Reports of mysterious disappearances in the train’s many coaches have spurred interest from the group. Like many of their adventures, it’s anything but a normal trip as the train itself has another demonic customer riding on board…

The movie is a follow-up to the popular manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge that was first published in 2016. It has since been adapted into an anime with a second series advertised for later this year.

Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train was first screened in Japan on October 16th, 2020 and has since become the country’s number one film, surpassing the previous record holder, Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 animated classic Spirited Away.
