Like an unstoppable train, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train keeps steaming ahead, bringing in $40,004,952 USD as of the evening of May 11th, 2021 according to Funimation.
Funimation, which is distributing the movie based on manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, added that Mugen Train is third in top-grossing anime films shown in North American theatres: only Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back and Pokémon: The Movie 2000 – The Power of One are ahead of it.
In the film, demon slayers Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Kyojuro Rengoku, and Inosuke Hashibira, along with Tanjiro’s possessed sister Nezuko are shown boarding a train in the dead of winter. Reports of mysterious disappearances in the train’s many coaches have spurred interest from the group. Like many of their adventures, it’s anything but a normal trip as the train itself has another demonic customer riding on board…
Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train was first screened in Japan on October 16th, 2020 and has since become the country’s number one film, surpassing the previous record holder, Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 animated classic Spirited Away.
