It’s not the long-rumored Switch Pro that gamers have been holding out for, but Nintendo has announced a third iteration of its portable Switch console that’s coming to retailers on October 8th, 2021.
Officially called the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model), this unit boasts a a larger seven inch (17.78 cm) screen for displaying brilliant colours and sharp contrast, internal storage upped to 64GB, improved speakers and integrated an ethernet port into the dock for use in TV mode. Nintendo has also revised the stand for table top mode from a flimsy finger-wide plastic tab to one that spans the width of the console for adjustable at multiple viewing angles. As in the first edition of the console, the Joy-Con controllers are detachable when using TV mode or table top mode.
The key difference in this unit is the technology used for the screen. OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode offers a greater range in colour, with darker blacks and natural brightness over the the standard LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, that’s used in the current Switch hardware.
To differentiate the OLED Model from previous versions, the console itself is all black and comes bundled with two white Joy-Con controllers and a white dock to give it that modern look inline with other competing video game systems.
The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) is compatible with all existing Nintendo Switch titles, both digital and physical, and Joy-Con controllers.
Nintendo has a suggested retail price of $349.99 USD (or $449.99 CAD for us up in Canada) for the Switch (OLED Model). The current Nintendo Switch goes for $299.99 USD and the Nintendo Switch Lite is priced at $199.99 USD.
