In the days leading up to their online convention, Crunchyroll has announced they’ve partnered with Cinestar Pictures to create a new animated space series titled Dark Star Squadron.

After an exciting evening out in a stolen starship, four students discover their campus destroyed and the remaining students and faculty missing. Even though they were on the verge of failing, the four band together and set out find their classmates in an exhilarating ride to the edges of the galaxy.

Actress Zoe Saldana, co-founder of Cinestar Pictures, joins her sisters Cisely and Mariel Saldana as executive producers for Dark Star Squadron, with Sonia A. Gambaro and Maytal Gilboa from Pollinate Entertainment as producers, and with Todd Ludy writing the script.

Zoe, Cisely and Mariel Saldana were quoted saying “As true animation and anime fans ourselves, we are so excited for the opportunity to partner with Crunchyroll to bring ‘Dark Star Squadron’ to a wide audience.” Sarah Victor, Head of Development for Crunchyroll added “We love working with creators who are passionate about telling stories through anime and we can’t wait to bring this interstellar epic to fans across the galaxy.”

In addition to the news of Dark Star Squadron, Crunchyroll has topped five million paid subscribers, with over 120 million registered user accounts and more than 60 million followers on multiple social media platforms. Crunchyroll serves up over 30,000 episodes across a thousand titles to fans in 200-plus countries globally.
