Revisit the virtual world of Aincrad in the latest Sword Art Online film titled Sword Art Online The Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, which will debut in North American theatres this December courtesy of Funimation and Aniplex of America.
In a staggered release, fans in Canada and the United States will get to watch Sword Art Online The Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night starting on December 3rd, followed by Australia and New Zealand on December 9th, and Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland shortly after. Of course, the film opens in Japan on October 30th, 2021.
Although not officially confirmed, it’s expected Cineplex will screen the film in its locations across Canada; the theatre chain last did so with the first film, Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, in 2017.
The original Japanese voice cast returns as Yoshitsugu Matsuoka reprises his role as the “Black Swordsman” Kirito, with Haruka Tomatsu as the “Lightning Flash” Asuna Yuuki, alongside newcomer Inori Minasa who voices Mito.
Sword Art Online The Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night retells the beginning of the Aincrad story from Asuna Yuuki’s perspective. Upon donning the NerveGear virtual reality headset, Asuna, who never played a video game in her life, is sucked into the online world of Aincrad. Trapped with thousands of others, she must find away to survive — dying in the game means dying in real life. But everything changes following a fateful encounter with another player by the name of Kirito…
Sword Art Online is based on a series of light novels written by Reki Kawahara and has since been adapted into a manga, three anime seasons (which currently stream on Funimation), films and multiple video games.
